Comix Zone

Fight your way across the panels of a living comic book as artist Sketch Turner in SEGA’s inventive 1995 beat ’em up.

Comix Zone opens with comic artist Sketch Turner being pulled into his own comic book by its villain, Mortus, who then draws enemies directly onto the page to stop him. You have to battle through panel after panel to escape and save the world of the story.

Released by SEGA for the Genesis in 1995, it is remembered for presenting a beat ’em up as a literal comic book, with speech bubbles, sound effect text and enemies sketched in real time. SEGA removed its standalone PC release from Steam in December 2024, so it is no longer sold there.

Comix Zone Gameplay Overview

Each page is split into panels, and Sketch moves between them by jumping, climbing or breaking through borders. Combat uses punches, kicks and combos, while puzzles need items like bombs, knives and iced tea for healing. Your pet rat Roadkill helps find hidden items. Every punch costs a little health when you tear paper, so careless fighting drains Sketch quickly.
